As AI challenges traditional survey checks, Moonlit asks what supports an answer and requires the participant to approve it.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA, UNITED STATES, October 22, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — If an AI is going to earn money answering research questions, a fluent answer is not enough. A buyer needs to know where the answer came from and whether the person behind it agreed to share it. Moonlit makes both questions part of its paid research workflow.
The challenge is documented in Sean J. Westwood’s 2025 PNAS study, which reported that an autonomous synthetic respondent passed 99.8% of standard attention checks across 6,000 trials. That finding concerns the study’s agent and test conditions; it is not a measurement of Moonlit. The paper is available at https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2518075122.
Moonlit uses a person’s own assistant to help answer questions about that person’s experience. For a purchase question, the assistant looks for a relevant record it has permission to access. It labels the basis of the answer and shows the person the draft and reward before anything is sent.
Approved answers may include limited source details, such as a merchant domain and date. Moonlit also uses occasional email-header checks, answer review and a seven-day verification hold before rewards become ready for payout. These checks provide evidence and constraints; they are not a guarantee that fraud is impossible.
The distinction is central to the offer. The assistant is helping a real participant contribute information they approve. It is not being paid to invent a plausible consumer. When evidence is missing, the answer should make that gap visible.
For companies, Moonlit provides aggregated results and withholds groups smaller than five. For participants, accepted answers create a way for their AI’s work to earn a reward, subject to available studies and verification.
